How holiday trash pickup delays work
When a holiday lands on a weekday, cities do one of four different things with your pickup. Which one applies depends on the city, not on the holiday. This guide sorts the 38 cities whose holiday notice TrashWeek has verified into those four rules and then shows the handling each city has posted for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day; a date the city has not posted yet is marked "Not posted yet".
Latest notice check recorded for these cities: 2026-10-14. The city's own notice wins if it changes.
The four rules
1. One-day slide 25 cities
The holiday and every later pickup that week run one day later. A Thursday holiday moves Thursday routes to Friday and Friday routes to Saturday; Monday to Wednesday routes are not affected. Cities with this rule: Cambridge (MA), Cedar Rapids (IA), Dayton (OH), Denver (CO), Detroit (MI), Fort Wayne (IN), Grand Rapids (MI), Huntsville (AL), Irvine (CA), Irving (TX), Long Beach (CA), Los Angeles (CA), Orlando (FL), Oxnard (CA), Philadelphia (PA), Providence (RI), Rancho Cucamonga (CA), Richmond (VA), San Francisco (CA), Seattle (WA), St. Paul (MN), Thornton (CO), Toledo (OH), Tucson (AZ), Worcester (MA).
Example — Seattle. The city's notice: “There is no garbage, recycling, or food and yard waste collection on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or New Year's Day. If your regular collection day falls on or after one of these holidays, your service will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week.” On Thu, Nov 26, 2026: Thursday routes run Friday, Friday routes run Saturday.
2. Skipped pickup, no slide 3 cities
The pickup that falls on the holiday is not made up and the rest of the week stays put. Your next pickup is on your regular day, so a missed pickup means holding the trash until then. Cities with this rule: Baton Rouge (LA), Miami-Dade County (FL), Richardson (TX).
Example — Miami-Dade County. The city's notice: “Waste is collected on all holidays (as observed by Miami-Dade County) except Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Independence Day and Christmas Day. Service after one of these holidays will be provided on your next regularly scheduled collection day.” On Fri, Dec 25, 2026: Friday pickup is skipped; the next pickup is on your regular day.
3. Published make-up days 9 cities
The city lists the exact date each affected pickup moves to, so the move is not always "one day later". All of these cities move pickups to a later day, and 4 move some pickups earlier than the holiday. Cities with this rule: Baltimore (MD), Charlotte (NC), Corpus Christi (TX), Fresno (CA), Jacksonville (FL), Lexington (KY), Madison (WI), Oklahoma City (OK), Waco (TX).
Moved earlier: Corpus Christi (TX), Lexington (KY), Madison (WI), Waco (TX). When a pickup moves earlier, the cart has to be at the curb earlier too.
Example — Lexington. The city's notice: “In the city's table the asterisk marks New Year's Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, the day after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day 2027: their make-up day is the Wednesday before. Martin Luther King Day, Presidents' Day, Memorial Day and Labor Day are made up the Wednesday after, and Veteran's Day has no make-up day.” On Thu, Nov 26, 2026: Thursday pickup moves to Wednesday Nov 25, Friday pickup moves to Wednesday Nov 25.
4. Normal collection 6 cities
Some haulers collect on holidays as usual. Dayton (OH) runs as usual on 1 of its listed 2026 holidays; Oxnard (CA) runs as usual on 2 of its listed 2026 holidays; Richardson (TX) runs as usual on 1 of its listed 2026 holidays; Roseville (CA) collects on every holiday; San Francisco (CA) runs as usual on 8 of its listed 2026 holidays; St. Paul (MN) runs as usual on 1 of its listed 2026 holidays.
Example — Roseville. The city's notice: “Garbage and green waste pick up still occurs on holidays.”

Questions
Does trash pickup run on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day?
It depends on the city. Among the 38 cities whose holiday notice TrashWeek has read and verified, 25 slide the rest of the week by one day, 3 skip that pickup without sliding the week, 9 publish specific make-up days and 1 collects as usual on holidays. Open your city's holiday page for its exact Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day rule.
What is a one-day slide?
When a holiday falls on a weekday, every route from the holiday to the end of that week runs one day later: a Thursday holiday moves Thursday routes to Friday and Friday routes to Saturday. Routes earlier in the week are not affected.
What if my city is not on the verified list?
41 of the 79 cities on TrashWeek are not fully verified yet: their pages shift only the dates that are confirmed and otherwise show the federal holiday calendar. For those cities, the city's own notice decides.
